Flowers: 4-16 in. clusters of yellow, lilac, bluish, white, or mixture flowers, spring; leaves divided into leaflets that spread out like spokes of wheel.

Uses: Dry gardens, accents, beach plants, screen. Fire resistive.

Wildlife: Nectar, pollen for bees and butterflies. Butterfly larvae.
Attracts hummingbirds. Deer resistant.

Soil: Well-drained.

Water: Occasional once established.

Sun: Full sun.

Notes: Also a nitrogen-fixing plant (it processes nitrogen and releases it to other plants through its dead leaves). Found along coast in sandy bluffs and plains from Ventura to Northern California. Hardy to 15° F.
