Flowers: Small yellow flowers, spring; leaves have spiny edges and are grayish-green; blue berries.

Uses: Ground cover, bird garden, border, near oak trees.

Wildlife: Nectar for butterflies, berries for birds. Deer resistant.

Soil: Well-drained.

Water: Some summer water.

Sun: Full sun to part shade.

Pruning: (No special needs found.)

Pests & Diseases: Leaf-eating caterpillars.

Notes: From the Yellow Pine Forest, Red Fir Forest, and Chaparral plant communities of California. It is found on streambanks. Roots are toxic.
