Type: Succulent shrub

Size: 3 to 5 ft. high and wide (10 yr.); can reach 15 ft.

Flowers: Flowers to 18 in., orange to scarlet, winter to early spring; leaves gray-green, smooth, about 1 ft. long.

Uses: Succulent bed, rock garden, accent, ornamental, container plant, near oak trees. Fire resistive.

Wildlife: Attracts hummingbirds. Deer resistant.

Soil: Prefers sandy soil, but tolerates heavier if well-drained. Prefers mulch.

Water: Low to medium.

Sun: Full sun in cool climate; some shade in heat.

Pruning: Prune off spent flower stems and damaged or rotten leaves.

Pests & Diseases: Scale insects, mealybugs, spider mites, fungus, stem rot. 

Notes: Comes from steep rocky slopes in its native South Africa. Look for other Aloes in various shapes, sizes, and colors in Beds D, F, H, and N. The A. striata is a particularly nice smaller specimen. Hardy to 25° F.
