“If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.”
Cicero

We have a unique, specialized collection.  Many of our books are not available in other libraries within San Luis Obispo County.

Gardeners of all abilities will find useful materials that can help them produce their own Mediterranean climate gardens. Students, researchers and the general public are welcome to use the materials in the library Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00AM to 12Noon or the second Sunday of the month from 1:00PM - 3:00PM. Other times may also be arranged by calling 805.541.1400 ext. 301. In addition, garden members and volunteers may use the library during regular office hours and may check out books, borrowing up to 5 items for up to 3 weeks. Garden-related periodicals are also available.

During staffed library hours (Wednesday and Friday 10:00AM-12Noon), a librarian is available to assist with subject searches of our collection and various internet sites. Search assistance at other times can be arranged by special request.

Our collection includes reference materials for garden staff and volunteer use, and materials of a more general nature. It specializes in books about the flora of the world’s five Mediterranean climate areas (found in Australia, California, Chile, the Mediterranean Basin and South Africa), all of which have dry summers and cool, moist winters. Our books cover many aspects of horticulture including garden design and gardening. We also have a small section of children’s books devoted to plants, gardening and nature.
