Origin: California

Type: Evergreen shrub

Size: 6 - 10 ft. high, 8 - 12 ft. wide.

Flowers: Large white flower cluster, spring; 2 in. rich green leaves.

Uses: Ground cover, slopes, near oaks, background, accent. Fire resistive.

Wildlife: Habitat, leaves for caterpillars; pollen, nectar, seeds for bees, butterflies, birds. Somewhat deer resistant.

Soil: Must be well-drained (native to rocky slopes).

Water: Seldom, keep away from stem. Some summer supplementary water but let soil dry first.

Sun: Full sun; some shade inland.

Pruning: Prune after blooms have faded; avoid cutting off limbs more than 1 in. in diameter. Pinch back shoot tips. Prune in summer; wet weather cuts may invite fungus.

Pests & Diseases: Root rot from too much water.

Notes: Not as drought tolerant inland. Found in coastal sage, chaparral, oak woodland, and yellow pine forest plant communities. Hardy to 10° F.
